Award Winner!
by S. May

It was a wonderful surprise to
receive news that Richard Reuss
was recognized by the House of
Representatives for his work as
an Advisor to the Great Lakes
Fishery Commission – for 30
years. Mr. Reuss was written up
in the Congressional Record as “a
consistent and strong advocate for
the Great Lakes.” Representing the
public-at-large on the commission,
he was first nominated in 1980 by
Governor Thompson to advise on
all matters relating to fish stocks
shared by Canada and the United
States. And for the first time in its
50-year history, the Commission
has created the position of Advisor
Emeritus and has asked Mr. Reuss
to serve in that capacity.
Previously as advisor, Dick Reuss
was a consistent and strong advocate
for the Great Lakes. He stayed in
regular contact with boaters, fishers,
and elected officials, was constantly
up to date on Great Lakes issues
and worked tirelessly to keep the
Commission and others informed.
Dick and Mary Reuss now live in
Glenview, but they were long-time
residents of Blue Island. You may
remember both of them as board
members of Blue Island’s Historical
Society as well as contributors at
Three Sisters Antiques. I loved
seeing his collection of Blue Island
memorabilia—things like old,
commemorative calendars from
the First National Bank (now Great
Lakes Bank), the Blue Island Diary
(yes, we did have one many moons
ago), and post cards, circa 1900.
Above all, Dick and Mary for their
years here in our town exhibited
energy, intelligence, courtesy to
others, and a commitment to our
community—a gift of good will.
