Haiti — our hearts break

by Sandy May

The devastation of families fills news reports of Haiti’s deluge. We can, at least, be happy as so many survivors are pulled from the unbelievable wreckage which has occurred. If I understand some reports, it does seem that at this time there is no detection system available to scientifically track earthquakes, which makes their occurrence so unpredictable—so dreadful and fatal.

Here and once again, Blue Islander’s step forth with compassion. This time we hear from the Kiwanis Club as they sponsor a used shoe drive to benefit earthquake victims. Please--shoes must have no holes or tears. They will be collected by Share Your Soles, a local organization that will distribute them in Haiti. Local drop off points are First Midwest Bank, 12015 Western, Charter One Bank, 11960 Western, the BI Public Library, 2433 York, the BI Recreation Center at 141st Street, the Park District, 12804 Highland, City Hall, the Clerk’s Office, and the MetroSouth Medical Center, Cafeteria.

Remember Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.

In our last issue, let us remind you that the Tommy Brown Sports Association is still accepting monetary donations – Send checks to P.O. Box 34 (phone 705- 3195.

And the other generous offer which bears repeating is from United Storage at 124th and Western, which is using one of their storage units to collect varied and useful items such as clothes, food/hygiene products, blankets and comforters. The Red Cross will pick up these items at the end of February, so hurry with your donations. Contact person for United is Chanelle Patrick (396-0300.

Thank you one and all—or should we repeat Hats Off!
